Researchers are finding that the EITC provides benefits across the life cycle and into the next generation, including a powerful effect on health outcomes. Studies have shown, for instance, that expansions of the EITC lead to a decrease in mothers’ risks of cardiovascular disease and improvements in mental health. The EITC has also been linked to reductions in the incidences of low birth weight and improved birth outcomes, including the narrowing of disparities in birth outcomes by race.
As funders increasingly look to a broad framework that defines the health of communities through social, economic, and environmental factors, this growing body of research provides an opportunity for cross-sector collaborations to advance public policies that promote economic opportunity and health equity.
